The manor of Stockland was held by Ralph de Reuilly from Ralph Pagnell in 1086 when it appeared in the Doomsday Book as Stocheland. The manor descended to Maurice de Gaunt, who left it in his will to the hospital of St. Mark at Bristol, when it was renamed Stockland Gaunts. After the hospital was dissolved in 1541, the Bristol Corporation took ownership and the manor was renamed Stockland Manor.
When he died in 1872 the house and manor passed down to his son and grandson until his great grandson Henry Cave Daniel dismembered the estate in 1947 and sold the house in 1952. Today, Stockland Manor is a Grade II Listed private residence. |
